  • Advanced protein and amino acid nutrition: Unlocks the calf’s potential for muscle growth and development with select sources of non-degradable and rumen degradable proteins to promote rumen microbial growth and furnish the best complement of essential amino acids.
  • Optimal energy nutrition: Matches the calf’s energy needs with multiple sources of energy as weight gains shift from growth to finishing; promotes efficient growth and development and finishing with reduced risk of digestive upsets (off-feed problems, acidosis, burnout) sometimes seen when excessive cereal grains are fed.
  • Optimal trace minerals: Proteinated copper, zinc, manganese and cobalt provide highly bioavailable sources of these key trace minerals for protein synthesis and energy utilization and to help maintain tissue integrity, support the immune system response and help maintain show condition of hair coat and hide.
  • Rumen and Gut health technology:  Aids feed intake and helps reduce risk of digestive upsets and burnout over long feeding periods.

Before You Feed

Before you feed your calf

The complete feeding directions below will help you put together a winning strategy for your calf, but first calculate the following:

Determine the amount of Show Calf Finisher-Grower you need to feed by calculating the following:

  • Total weight gain needed: Subtract your calf’s current weight from the desired show weight: ______ pounds
  • Estimated daily gain: Divide the total weight gain needed by the number of days until the show date: _____ pounds
  • Target daily feed intake: Check the feeding schedule by using the estimated daily gain: ____ pounds

Be sure to subtract the weight of your feed container when you weigh your feed.

Feeding Directions

Feeding directions

  • Show Calf Finisher feed is a complete formula for promoting efficient growth and development and desired finish in show cattle and is formulated to serve as the sole ration during the finishing period.
  • Show Calf Finisher feed should be introduced a minimum of 120 days before the show date. The actual starting date for this feed will depend on breed, weight, age and desired level of finish.
  • We recommend feeding Show Calf Grower feed during the growing period up to 900 pounds, allowing a minimum of 120 days before the show date before switching to Show Calf Finisher.
  • Change feed gradually by introducing two to three pounds of Show Calf Finisher feed and removing an equal amount of Show Calf Grower formula. Continue to replace the grower feed at this daily rate until the targeted feed intake level is achieved for Show Calf Finisher, as noted in the feeding schedule.
  • Once the transition is complete, use the feeding schedule as a guide.

Important: This feed is available in a medicated form. Please refer to the tag on the bag for important information and instructions related to medication, including proper feeding instructions and any cautions, warnings and limitations that may apply.

Slowing the rate of gain
If calves are gaining too rapidly in the finishing period, it may be necessary to use one of the following options:

  • Option 1: Decrease the daily allotment of Show Calf Finisher feed by two to four pounds. Add one pound of Sheen® supplement to the daily ration to compensate for decreased mineral and vitamin intake.
  • Option 2: Blend Show Calf Finisher feed with up to 50 percent Show Calf Grower.

Difficult finishing
Some large frame calves may require longer finishing periods or increased energy density in the finishing ration to achieve the desired finish. To help increase energy density, substitute 10 to 20 percent of steam rolled corn for an equal quantity of Show Calf Finisher formula. Add one pound of Sheen® supplement to the daily ration to compensate for lower protein, mineral and vitamin fortification in corn.

Going off feed (burn out)
This feed has been carefully formulated to help prevent feed consumption loss. However, should your calf experience a drop in feed consumption of more than 10 percent of targeted daily feed intake for more than two days, feed hay to offset the decrease in consumption, or blend in Show Calf Grower formula at a rate up to half of daily intake. A more dramatic drop in feed consumption may require going back to the beginning and reinitiating your calf to feed. In either case, return to finisher ration should be done gradually. Should your calf go completely off feed, consult your veterinarian.

Important management tips

  • Check weight gains at set time intervals and adjust daily feeding rate as needed to help ensure targeted weight gains are reached.
  • Calculate weight gains at a rate that will provide consistent growth and adequate time for finishing.
  • Always transition slowly from one ration to another to avoid upset.
  • Provide plenty of clean, fresh water at all times.
